Along with your studies come many financial responsibilities. A student identity card, which gives you various benefits, can help make this financial burden lighter. In Lithuania, students have two options: the Lithuanian Student Identity Card (LSP) and the International Student Identity Card (ISIC). You can have both at the same time, yet many young people starting university wonder which card (or combination) to choose.
First of all, the LSP gives you the right to use your higher education institution’s library and equipment. It is also used when taking exams, checking grades, and logging in to the university’s internal information system, so if you are studying or planning to study in Lithuania or Europe, you will definitely need this card. It is not true that the LSP is not valid abroad. Each country decides how it treats different student cards, but most students can use the LSP as a student card abroad without any problems (there is a reason why it is written on it both in English and in Latin). However, if you like to travel or plan to study at foreign universities through the Erasmus+ exchange programme, you are more likely to get various discounts with an ISIC card. This card is international and proves student status not only in Lithuania, but also in another 130 countries around the world. ISIC holders can also use a free digital student card on their phone and a mobile app that works even without an internet connection. These are probably the biggest differences between LSP and ISIC.
One of the most important benefits for students is that both of these cards give discounts on public and intercity transport. ISIC holders can also get transport discounts in some foreign countries. In Lithuania, students get an 80 percent discount on local period tickets and a 50 percent discount on single tickets. For intercity travel around the country, a 50 percent discount is applied as well. So if you go to study in another city, having a student card will help you save a lot, and you can spend the money you save on hobbies and fun.
Student card holders enjoy not only cheaper transport. Many companies and organisations take part in discount programmes and offer their goods and services at lower prices. With ISIC and LSP, students in Lithuania and around the world can use up to 150,000 different discounts. The range of special offers is really wide: with either card you can get cheaper services in some medical clinics, beauty salons, as well as discounts in shops, bookstores, gas stations, parcel terminals, museums, accommodation and food places, and bars. There are also discounts for travel, bike and motorbike rental, taxi services, courses and training, gym memberships, gifts and all kinds of entertainment. Choose the card that suits you best and use the benefits that come with it so that your study years become truly unforgettable!
