Sexuality is a fundamental aspect of the person, extending throughout life from birth, and encompassing aspects of gender identity, gender roles, sexual orientation, intimacy, pleasure and reproduction. It is one of the most complex parts of a person’s identity, as it is influenced by the interaction of psychological, social, biological, political, historical and religious factors.
Sexuality education is age-appropriate and coherent personal education that reflects the needs of our time, encompasses personal development and understanding of gender identity, and provides science-based and unprejudiced information on reproductive health and sexual behaviour, and empowers individuals to make safe choices and to communicate about different aspects of sexuality.
Sexuality education experts emphasise the need to develop and nurture a conscious personality that is aware of its physiological and psychological nature, recognises its needs, can consciously choose the most appropriate course of action for itself, and fosters a respectful and open relationship with itself and those around it. It is also crucial in the process of gender education to be aware of the stereotypes that prevail in society and to recognise the range of possible personal identities as diverse, valuable and worthy of respect. Sex education can be understood as a much narrower process, focusing on the person’s bodily identity, physiology, sexual maturity and reproductive health.
Reproductive health – a person’s ability to lead a responsible, enjoyable and safer sex life, the right to decide if/when and how many children to have, the right to access to information on safe, effective, affordable and acceptable contraceptive methods and appropriate health care services, and the right to a safe pregnancy and childbirth.
